Allergy Aware schools have many things in place to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.

If an allergic reaction does happen while the child is at school, it will be recognised and managed well.

Documentation

  • Anaphylaxis policy
  • Individual anaphylaxis care plans for students at risk of anaphylaxis
  • An ASCIA Action Plan for each student at risk of anaphylaxis

Reducing risk

This includes things such as:

  • Not sharing food
  • Hand washing
  • Thinking about people at risk of anaphylaxis when planning activities

Staff are trained to

  • Know which students are at risk of anaphylaxis
  • Reduce the risk of an allergic reaction
  • Recognise and treat allergic reactions

Food technology staff and canteen staff and volunteers

  • Complete All about Allergens for Schools online training so they know how to make and serve food for people with food allergies

Communication

The school shares information about:

  • How the school manages allergies and the risk of anaphylaxis
  • How the school community can help keep students safe

Allergy Medication

  • The student’s own adrenaline (epinephrine) injector and a copy of their ASCIA Action Plan are provided to the school
  • The school has a general use adrenaline injector
